The Battle Is Real

The battle is real, folks. Imagine you’re at an exclusive dinner party with God, just you and Him at this divine table. It’s straight out of Psalm 23. Now, this isn’t a tranquil garden party – this table is smack dab in the middle of a war zone, with enemies all around. Picture it: a five-star meal in the middle of a battlefield. Your enemies see you dining with the King of the Universe, and they’re dying to crash the party.

Enter the Enemy, stage left, sneaking around trying to score a seat. He’s not there for the hors d’oeuvres. Nope, he’s got a bag full of subtle lies, all designed to make you doubt your VIP status at God’s table or to convince you there’s a better buffet somewhere else. It’s like the Devil is your overly persistent, uninvited guest who keeps whispering, “Psst, the food’s better at that other table.”

But here’s the twist: while the Devil is busy spinning his web of deception, Jesus is sitting right there with you. He’s got your back, ready to rescue you when needed, to shield you from the flaming arrows of doubt, and to refill your cup to overflowing—no skimping on the blessings.

The tricky part is, with all the Devil’s smooth talk, it’s easy to confuse his lies with the truth. Recognizing these lies isn’t about obsessing over them, but about avoiding them and turning your attention back to the Good Shepherd. Despite the Devil’s creative repertoire, his lies usually fall into five main categories. Learn to spot these as they come, and you can dodge the deception and win the battle for your mind, all in Jesus’ name.

The Grass is Always Greener… or Is It?

So, here’s the deal: if you’ve recently caught yourself thinking that things are better at another table, congratulations, the Enemy has RSVP’d to your dinner party. Jesus’ table, the one He prepares for you, is all about life and life in abundance (John 10:10). But the Devil? He’s the master of false advertising, specializing in tables that promise the world but deliver nothing but heartache—stealing, killing, and destroying.

Picture this: you’re at a lavish banquet with the King of the Universe, but the Devil’s sidling up, whispering sweet nothings about how amazing the spread is at some other table. He’s like that shady salesman at the state fair, promising the moon if you just step right over here. The food’s better, the view’s better, heck, even the napkins are better! But it’s all a scam.

Don’t fall for it. The Devil’s got a PhD in comparison studies. He’ll get you to look at your life through a funhouse mirror, making everything seem warped and inadequate. A sprinkle of jealousy here, a dash of coveting there, and pretty soon you’re simmering in a stew of discontent. Before you know it, you’re convinced that God must love your neighbor more, bless them more, heck, maybe even remember their name more often.

We call this the “grass is always greener” syndrome. If you’re not laser-focused on your table with the Almighty, you’re gonna get distracted by the table next door. The Enemy’s a slick artist, painting a perfect picture of freedom just out of reach, promising that everything you desire is “over there.”

But here’s the kicker: Jesus didn’t come to hand out empty promises. He came to give life and give it abundantly. The thoughts that you can ditch your commitments and live it up without consequences? Yeah, those aren’t from Jesus. So, next time you catch yourself eyeing the table across the way, remember who set the table before you and the life He’s promised you—overflowing, abundant, and right here where you are.

The Lie that You’re Doomed: Spoiler Alert—You’re Not

Ever catch yourself saying, “Man, I don’t know if I’m going to make it through this season. This semester’s going to bury me. I’m not sure we’ll survive this time”? Yeah, we’ve all been there. But let me ask you—where’d you pick up that gloomy soundtrack? Not from your Good Shepherd, that’s for sure. That melodrama is brought to you courtesy of the Enemy, whispering sweet nothings of doom and gloom at your table.

Here’s the reality check: God Himself told you that even if you’re walking through the valley of the shadow of death, there’s zero need to fear evil. Did you catch the operative word there? Through. Not into the valley, but through the valley. Translation? You’re gonna make it to the other side.

You won’t find the Good Shepherd mumbling about how you’re doomed. No way. He doesn’t despair. He’s not out here handing you a towel to throw in. Instead, He’s all about, “Hey, we’re going through this valley, and I’m with you every step of the way. And guess what? We’ll have a killer story to tell once we’re out.”

Remember when God delivered His people from Egypt? He didn’t build a scenic bridge over the Red Sea. Nope, He parted the sea, and they walked right through it. God’s game plan isn’t usually to build bridges over troubled waters. He’s more of a “part the sea and let’s walk right through” kind of guy. Psalm 77:19 says it best: “Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters—a pathway no one knew was there!” You’re not just in a mess; you’re moving through it. And your Shepherd is right there with you.

Ever bought into the lie that you’re hopeless? Newsflash: you’re not. Jesus lives in you, and with Him, hopelessness doesn’t stand a chance. So next time the Enemy tries to RSVP to your pity party, remind him you’re too busy walking through the valley with the King of the Universe. And you’re gonna have one heck of a story to tell.

The Lie of Worthlessness: Spoiler Alert—You’re Priceless

Alright, let’s talk about a real sneaky one: the lie of worthlessness. Now, Scripture does call us to be humble, but let’s get one thing straight—humility isn’t thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less. Sometimes we get it twisted and think it honors God to belittle ourselves, but guess what? That’s so far from the truth it’s practically orbiting another planet.

Maybe someone once told you you’d never amount to anything. A spouse walked away, a parent bailed, or that dream partner never showed up. Maybe you’ve wished you looked like someone else or had your friend’s talents. Or maybe a dump truck of guilt backed into your life and unloaded a mountain of shame on you.

Here’s the kicker: the “not enough” anthem was composed in the pit of hell. It’s crippling, debilitating, paralyzing, and suffocating. It didn’t come from the Good Shepherd. This lie isn’t humility; it’s a sledgehammer that smacks you over the head, whispering you’re useless and will never have what it takes.

Have you been called to lead a small group at church? This lie insists it can’t be done. Are you called to lead your family with integrity, compassion, kindness, and strength as a wife and mother who follows God? This lie tells you you’re not good enough, you’re never going to amount to anything, so why even bother trying?

But here’s the beautiful truth from John 10:11—Jesus, the Good Shepherd, lays down His life for the sheep. That’s right, Jesus has put it all on the line for you! You’re not just enough; you’re priceless. So, when the Enemy starts singing that old “not enough” tune, just remind him who laid down His life for you. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t him.

The Lie of Me Against the World: Spoiler Alert—It’s Not You vs. Everyone

Let’s dive into another doozy: the lie that everyone is out to get you. You start believing everyone at work hates you, your family hates you, your church hates you. Heck, even the waiter who just served you hates you! This is the voice of fear-based paranoia, convincing you to mistrust every single person in your life.

But the Enemy is sly. He’ll plant subtler seeds of doubt, slowly eroding your confidence. Maybe you don’t hear the word “hate,” but you start thinking, “Well, that person didn’t even look up when I walked into the office—I bet she doesn’t like me.” Or, “See those people talking over there? They’re gossiping about me.” Before you know it, you’re convinced you have no friends, everyone is out to get you, and nobody likes you.

What’s the truth? Sure, someone might not be your biggest fan, but it’s highly unlikely that everyone is against you. If you’re buying into this lie, chances are you’ve got your fists clenched and are ready to strike. Somewhere along the way, you adopted a defensive stance, and now it’s your go-to move. Your walls are sky-high.

People have hurt you before, so now you’re determined never to let anyone close enough to do it again.

But here’s the reality check: You need to let the Good Shepherd lead you by still waters. When God is guiding you through the valley, you don’t need to manage every outcome. You can stop looking over your shoulder and take the boxing gloves off. The truth is, you’re not alone, and everyone isn’t against you. You’re in good company with the Good Shepherd. So, breathe, relax, and let go of the paranoia.

The Lie that There’s No Way Out: Don’t Fall for It!

Here’s a classic from the Enemy’s playbook: There’s no escape. He combines all his previous lies to hit you with the ultimate whammy—you’re trapped. No options. No hope. Nowhere to turn or run. You’re convinced you’ll never be free again.

The consequences of your bad choices are closing in from one side, and betrayal by friends from the other. Your reputation is in shambles. Your job’s on the line. You can’t go back to your community. You can’t trust anyone. You’ve exhausted all your options. The pressure is unbearable. The whispers urge you to give up, cash out, leave town, or worse.

I get it. I’ve weathered enough storms to understand the crushing weight of those feelings. But if you think there’s no way out, let me drop some game-changing news on you—you are surrounded! But not in the way you think.

Sure, circumstances might be closing in. Enemies might be positioning themselves. Your world might be encircled by threats, accusations, and missiles of hate. But that’s only half the story. The Enemy wants you to believe you’re doomed. That escape is impossible.

Here’s the kicker: The Spirit of God is interceding for you. “Lord, open her spiritual eyes; Father, let him see with the eyes of faith.”

The truth is, that God has everyone and everything surrounding you. You’re not out of options. You’re in the company of the Almighty. So, take heart, and don’t fall for the Enemy’s lie. There is always a way out when you’re with God.

Defeating the Lies: Take Back Your Table

When the Enemy whispers, “You’re not smart enough, strong enough, pretty enough, good enough…” just lock eyes with the King. He’s right there, saying, “Daughter—Son—I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but at this table with you.” His words are life (John 6:68), His voice is louder than thunder (Psalm 68:33), and it drowns out every lie. By His grace, you can kick the Devil out of your dinner party. In Jesus’ name, the Enemy has to flee.

Think of your mind as a garden. Seeds can blow in, birds can drop them, or they can get scattered in various ways. But you, the gardener, decide what grows. You water the good seeds, cultivate them, and yank out any weeds.

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” You get to choose what thoughts take root. Plant the good ones—God’s words—and watch them flourish. As they grow, they’ll crowd out the Enemy’s weeds.
