Reflecting on my childhood, I distinctly remember having an innate sense of God’s existence. Though I grew up in a non-religious environment, without the guidance of church-going parents or regular family prayers, the presence of God was always somehow real to me. My grandmother played a crucial role in this. Every Sunday morning, she would take me on a bus to a Catholic church. There, we would light a candle, sit in a pew, and she would confess her sins. These small acts of faith planted the seeds of belief in my young heart.

Growing Up Without a Father

I was born into a fatherless home and later had a stepfather who tried to fill the void left by my biological father. My mother, a single parent, juggled multiple jobs to provide us with shelter and food, leaving little time for spiritual nurturing. Despite this, moments of divine intervention were evident in our lives, like the church that brought us a Thanksgiving meal. These instances reassured me of God’s presence.

The Search for Stability

Throughout my childhood and teenage years, we moved frequently due to my mother’s constant search for a stable living situation. I attended various schools, from private Catholic institutions to public schools. This instability meant that our primary focus was on survival rather than spiritual growth. However, the sporadic reminders of God’s love and presence stayed with me.

A Personal Relationship with God

Despite the lack of a structured religious upbringing, I maintained a personal connection with God. Every night, I would kneel and pray, sharing my fears and loneliness with Him. This nightly ritual was a source of comfort and strength. It wasn’t until I consciously began my own relationship with God that I truly started to understand His love and promises.

Understanding God’s Love

What did I begin to understand? The simple yet profound truth found in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus’s sacrifice gives us new life, and He promised the Holy Spirit to be with us always. Reflecting on my childhood prayers, I realized that I had been inviting the Holy Spirit into my life all along.

The Power of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit’s presence in my life has been a constant source of guidance and strength. As a child, I unknowingly stood for His truth. This realization is powerful! Despite the hardships and challenges, God’s love and the Holy Spirit’s guidance were always there, shaping my journey.

Embracing God’s Love

Jesus, despite being disrespected and rejected by the very people He came to save, never succumbed to self-pity. He gave everything for us. Yet, we often take His love for granted, turning to Him only as a last resort. We fail to embrace the true joy and power available to us through Him.

Living in Faith

It’s time to stop living in the past and start transforming our lives. We must stop excusing ourselves and embrace the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:9 and 1 Corinthians 12 remind us of this power. We need to demonstrate our faith, not just say we believe. Act as if Jesus can handle our problems because He can. Don’t let hardships cause you to lose hope. God may have special work for you to do, even because of your condition.
