Hey there! Today, we will talk about something really important in Christianity: the difference between morality and legalism. Don’t worry if those words sound big – we’ll explain them in a way that’s easy to understand!

What’s Morality?

Morality is about doing what’s right and good. In Christianity, it’s about following God’s teachings and trying to be a good person. This is super important!

Real-life example: Think about a time when you helped a friend who was sad. You didn’t do it because someone told you to, but because you knew it was the right thing to do. That’s morality in action!

What’s Legalism?

Legalism is when people focus too much on following rules without understanding the love and grace behind them. It’s like only caring about the “don’ts” and forgetting about the “dos” of being kind and loving.

Personal anecdote: I once knew someone who refused to go out with others on Sundays because their family had a strict “no fun on Sundays” rule. They didn’t understand why the rule existed, it was taught to them from their parents. They just followed it blindly. That’s a simple example of legalism.

God is Balanced

Some people think God is super strict, but that’s not true. God is balanced. He cares about both doing the right thing (truth) and being loving and forgiving (grace).

In the Bible, John 1:14 talks about Jesus being “full of grace and truth.” This means Jesus showed both kindness and honesty.

Jesus Shows Us the Way

Jesus was great at showing this balance. Once, he met a woman who was hurting. Instead of being harsh, he was kind to her. He said, “Woman, you are set free” (based on Luke 13:12). Jesus didn’t have to punish her to help her – he just showed her love and truth.

Modern-day example: Imagine your friend accidentally breaks your vase. A “legalistic” response might be to get angry and refuse to have them over your home anymore. But a response full of grace and truth would be to tell your friend that you’re sad about the broken vase, but you still care about them and forgive them.

Question to ponder: Can you think of a time when someone showed you grace even though you made a mistake? How did it make you feel?

We’re All Special to God

The Bible says in Galatians 3:28 that in God’s eyes, we’re all equal. It doesn’t matter if we’re men or women, rich or poor, or where we come from. God loves us all the same!

But remember, being equal doesn’t mean we’re all exactly the same. God made each of us unique and special in our own way.

Personal anecdote: In my early year in school, there was a kid who was always left out because he was different. One day, our teacher taught us about how God loves everyone equally. After that, we started including him in our games. It was amazing to see how much happier everyone was when we treated each other as equals!

Being Judgmental Hurts Everyone

Sometimes, Christians can be too harsh when judging others who are having a hard time. And sometimes, non-Christians judge Christians for what they believe. Either way, being judgmental hurts everyone and doesn’t help anyone.

Here are two examples:

Two Scenarios of Judgment

1. A Christian judging someone who is struggling: Imagine a Christian who sees a person struggling with addiction. Instead of offering help, they say, “You’re a sinner, and you need to change your ways or you’ll go to hell.” This kind of judgment doesn’t help—it only makes the person feel worse. Jesus wouldn’t have done this. Instead, He would have shown love, kindness, and offered to help.
2. A non-Christian judging a Christian: Now think about someone who isn’t a Christian judging a Christian for going to church and following their faith. They might say, “You’re wasting your time believing in fairy tales.” This kind of judgment doesn’t lead to understanding. Instead, it pushes people apart. Jesus taught us not to judge others but to love them, even if they don’t share our beliefs.

Question to reflect on: Have you ever judged someone too quickly? How might you approach the situation differently next time?

What Would Jesus Do?

When Jesus was on Earth, he was kind to everyone. But he also stood up to people who were being unfair, like the Pharisees who judged others too harshly.

Real-life example: There was a story in the news about a church that welcomed homeless people to sleep in their building during winter. Some people criticized them, saying it wasn’t “proper.” But the church members asked themselves, “What would Jesus do?” and decided that showing love was more important than following strict rules about building use.

Be Guided by Love

If our actions and feelings aren’t coming from God’s love, they might be coming from unkind thoughts. Let’s try to be more like Jesus – loving, kind, and fair to everyone.
