We live in a world that is fascinated by beauty. From the tale of Snow White and the Queen who was consumed with jealousy over Snow White’s beauty, to today’s endless competitions, social media, and beauty contests—society is obsessed with outward appearances. Everywhere we look, we see advertisements promoting beauty products, clothing, makeup, and cosmetic surgery, all pushing the message that we need to look a certain way to be valued.
But what is true beauty? Is it something you can buy or surgically enhance? Let’s take a deeper look at what really makes a woman beautiful in God’s eyes.
The Fascination with Beauty
In the story of Snow White, the Queen asked her mirror, “Who is the fairest of them all?” Her obsession with being the most beautiful drove her to jealousy and ultimately destruction. Today, it’s not much different. Scroll through social media, and you’ll find countless images of women trying to appear flawless—filters, makeup, and even cosmetic surgeries creating an unattainable image of beauty. Advertisers spend billions selling products that promise to make us more attractive. But even with all of this, many women still feel inadequate or unattractive because they don’t meet this ideal.
No scientist, doctor, or engineer has ever been able to create a woman—only God can do that. And He made you perfectly unique, exactly as He intended. You don’t have to look like the women in commercials or social media influencers to be beautiful. Your value is not determined by how closely you resemble an airbrushed image. Instead, it’s time to start appreciating yourself and recognizing that true beauty comes from within.
The Destructive Power of Focusing on the Wrong Things
In Judges 16, we read the story of Samson and Delilah. Delilah’s beauty and charm captivated Samson, but it wasn’t her outward appearance that led to his downfall—it was where his focus was. Samson was no stranger to beautiful women. His mistake was that he put his trust in the wrong person, focusing on physical beauty instead of spiritual strength.
Life isn’t a fairy tale, and focusing solely on outward beauty will never lead to true fulfillment. When we prioritize the wrong things—whether it’s appearance, wealth, or status—we miss out on the deeper, lasting joy that comes from God. True beauty is found in the heart, in our relationship with God, and in how we love others.
Discovering the Love of God and the Beauty Within
God created each of us in His image, which means our value and beauty are inherent in who we are. Psalm 139:14 tells us, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” This verse reminds us that our worth doesn’t come from what society tells us is beautiful but from God’s design.
The band MercyMe captures this message in their song “Beautiful.” It speaks directly to the truth that God sees us as beautiful just as we are, no matter how we might feel or how the world perceives us.

God’s love is unconditional, and He sees beauty far beyond what the world values. Psalm 139:14 tells us, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” This verse serves as a reminder that we are valuable just as we are.
Practical Steps to Start Appreciating Yourself
- Recognize Your Unique Worth
Reflect on the gifts and talents God has given you. Write them down and remind yourself that you are a beloved child of God. - Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
The next time you catch yourself comparing, take a moment to remember that those images are often filtered and edited. Instead, focus on your own journey and progress. - Embrace Your God-Given Purpose
Spend time in prayer, asking God to reveal His plans for you. Journaling about your dreams can also help clarify your purpose. - Surround Yourself with Positive Influences
Seek out friendships that uplift you and encourage you to see your worth. Share your journey with others who support your growth. - Start Daily Affirmations
Begin each day with positive affirmations based on Scripture. For example, say, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made,” to remind yourself of your value.
Discovering the Love of God and the Beauty Within (continued)
We need to remember that God’s love for us is unconditional, and He sees beauty far beyond what the world values. True beauty radiates from the soul—it’s found in kindness, compassion, and the light of Christ shining through us. While society might encourage us to focus on outward appearances, God calls us to focus on our inner self, where true transformation happens.
In 1 Peter 3:3-4, we are reminded, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”
This verse doesn’t mean that taking care of ourselves or enjoying fashion is wrong—it simply reminds us that real beauty is deeper. It’s who we are in God’s eyes, not who the world says we need to be.
How to Start Appreciating Yourself
- Recognize Your Unique Worth
God created you exactly as He intended. Your value comes from being a beloved child of God, not from meeting societal beauty standards. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” You are His masterpiece! - Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
Social media can be a dangerous trap for comparison. When you find yourself feeling inadequate because of what you see online, remember that those images often don’t reflect reality. Instead of comparing, focus on the gifts and talents God has given you. Galatians 6:4-5 reminds us, “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.” - Embrace Your God-Given Purpose
You are here for a reason. Your value isn’t defined by your looks, but by the purpose God has for you. As you grow in your relationship with Him, He will reveal more of His plans for you, which are far greater than anything the world could offer. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” - Surround Yourself with Positive Influences
Seek relationships that affirm your God-given worth. Spend time with people who encourage you to grow spiritually and appreciate you for who you are. This kind of community will help you stay grounded in your true identity.
Reflection: Discovering Your True Beauty
Take a moment to think about how your perspective on beauty has been influenced by society. What are the lies you’ve believed about yourself? Now, replace those lies with God’s truth about who you are. Here are some reflection questions to guide you:
- How often do you compare your appearance to others? How can you break free from this habit?
- What steps can you take to focus more on your inner beauty and less on outward appearances?
- How would your life change if you started appreciating yourself the way God sees you?
A Prayer for Finding Your True Beauty
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for creating me in Your image and for making me fearfully and wonderfully. Help me to see myself through Your eyes, not through the lens of the world’s standards. Lord, I ask for the strength to stop comparing myself to others and to embrace the unique beauty You’ve placed within me. Teach me to appreciate myself and to reflect Your love and kindness in all that I do. Remind me that true beauty is found in my heart, and that I am valuable because I belong to You. Amen.
Final Thoughts: Embrace the Beauty God Has Given You
As you go through life, remember that true beauty comes from being confident in who God made you to be. You don’t need to fit the mold of society’s standards to be valuable. You are already beautiful because you are loved and cherished by God. While the world may focus on outward appearances, God calls us to focus on inner beauty, where love, grace, and kindness reside.
So, let today be the day you start appreciating yourself. Thank God for who you are, and trust that He has a purpose for your life. Surround yourself with His truth and allow that to define your worth.
