Anticipation can be a beautiful and nerve-wracking experience, often bringing a mix of excitement and anxiety. When we’re waiting for answers, whether it’s a job offer, a diagnosis, a loved one’s decision, or a big life change, it’s natural for our minds to fill with questions and “what ifs.” We may find ourselves on an emotional rollercoaster, oscillating between hope and worry.
But God invites us to handle anticipation differently. He calls us to cast our anxieties on Him, to surrender our need to control outcomes, and trust that His plan—though it may look different than ours—is always for our good.
Scenario 1: Waiting for a Job Offer
Imagine you’re waiting for news after a job interview. You’ve been praying for this opportunity and preparing for months. The interview went well, and now you’re in that uncomfortable space between hope and uncertainty. Each time the phone rings, your heart skips a beat. Days go by, and you hear nothing, and in the silence, anxiety creeps in. You begin to worry, “What if they don’t call? What if I did something wrong? What will I do next?”
In this situation, God invites you to release each anxious thought and remind yourself that He knows the plans He has for you (Jeremiah 29:11). Whether you get the job or not, He is already preparing something beautiful for your future. This doesn’t mean giving up your hope, but it means anchoring it in God rather than in the outcome of this one job.
Scenario 2: Waiting for a Health Diagnosis
Let’s say you’re waiting for test results after a series of medical exams. You’re worried about what the doctors might find, and every day feels like a marathon of anxious thoughts. You can’t sleep, you’re distracted, and the thought of a negative diagnosis fills you with fear. You pray, asking God to heal you, but the silence can be deafening. Why hasn’t He answered yet?
Here, God is calling you to let go of the fear that’s holding you captive and lean on His promise to be with you no matter what. Even though you don’t know what the future holds, He knows, and He’s right by your side. In moments like these, trusting Him might mean choosing to believe that He’ll give you the strength and peace you need, regardless of the diagnosis.
Analogy: The Sculptor and the Stone
Consider a sculptor chipping away at a block of stone. Each strike of the hammer, each piece that falls away, brings the stone closer to its final form. The stone, if it could feel, might not understand why pieces are being removed or why it’s undergoing this painful process. But the sculptor sees the masterpiece within. In our lives, God is the sculptor, and we are the stone. He may remove parts of our plans or take us through painful situations, not to harm us but to shape us into something even more beautiful. Though we may not understand in the moment, we are His creation, and He sees the whole picture.
A Bible Lesson on Anticipation and Trust: 1 Peter 5:7
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
This scripture invites us to give our anxieties to God and release our need to control. Casting your anxieties doesn’t mean you ignore them, but rather that you choose to place them in God’s hands. He knows what you need better than you do.
Reflect on this: What’s weighing on you right now that you need to give over to Him?
Reflection Questions
- What is something you’re currently anticipating or waiting for in your life? How does that anticipation make you feel?
- What steps can you take to release your anxiety about the outcome and surrender it to God?
- What are some ways God has shown you in the past that He is trustworthy, even when situations didn’t go as you planned?
- When you think of casting your anxieties on God, what does that look like to you in a practical sense?
Practical Steps to Embrace Peace in the Waiting
- Pray with Honesty: Talk to God openly about your worries, asking Him to help you release control and trust in His timing.
- Practice Gratitude: In moments of worry, pause to thank God for what you already have and how far you’ve come. Gratitude shifts your focus from what you lack to what you have.
- Surround Yourself with Encouragement: Surround yourself with friends, scripture, and music that remind you of God’s promises and faithfulness.
- Write it Down: Journaling your anxieties and prayers can help you visually hand them over to God. Often, seeing your fears on paper makes them feel less overwhelming.
- Take It One Day at a Time: Anticipation can make us feel like the answer needs to come immediately. But God often works through process, allowing us to grow in trust and patience. Focus on trusting Him one day at a time.
Remember, whatever you’re waiting for, God is already in the future, preparing the way. He is in control, and His love and care for you never waver. If you can take a step back, surrender your anxiety, and let Him work, you’ll find peace—even in the midst of anticipation.
Prayer for Peace in Anticipation
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being with me in every season, including this time of waiting. I come before You with a heart that feels anxious and uncertain, but I know You are my anchor and strength. I surrender my worries to You, trusting that You are working behind the scenes for my good and for Your glory.
Help me, Lord, to release control and place my hopes and fears in Your capable hands. Remind me that Your timing is perfect and that You see the whole picture, even when I cannot. Grant me peace in this waiting period and the patience to endure with faith. Help me to see this time as an opportunity to draw closer to You and to grow in trust and hope.
Thank You, Lord, for carrying my burdens and for loving me through every unknown. May I rest in Your promises, knowing that You have good plans for me, plans to prosper me and give me hope and a future. I trust that no matter the outcome, You are with me, and Your love will sustain me.
In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Warm Wishes,
