Psalm 139:14: Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” —Psalm 139:14

Psalm 139:14 is a beautiful reminder of God’s intricate design and intentionality in creating each of us. It speaks to our value, uniqueness, and the care God took in forming every part of who we are. Yet, in today’s world, it’s easy to lose sight of this truth amidst self-doubt, societal pressures, and comparison.

It is clear in the words in the Bible that God created us with a purpose and it was good. He loves us and was willing to give His only Son that we might have a right relationship with Him. Why do have so much trouble believing God values us? The problem lies not with our value, but with our perception. Value is in the eye of the beholder. God is the Creator and beholder, not us. He sees us with spiritual eyes. He thinks we are a wonderful creation!

The problem is that we have a different perception of ourselves because we only pay attention to the world’s point of view. Either you are overweight, or too thin. We think of ourselves as an average person. So we try to look for it in other people, your career, education, in our partners to find true value. Stand in line because according to the world you are never good enough!

Do you ever find yourself silently judging someone in your mind of yours andget get carried away in your thoughts? Of course. you have, I believe there isn’t one person in this planet that has not! I am so glad God doesn’t think of us that way. He created us so He would never see us like that.

God sees us with spiritual eyes. He thinks we are a wonderful creation! Can you imagine how different you would be if you thought of yourself the way God does of you? Would you be any different? I think so!

We see our flaws, our mistakes, our sins and our pain and we become our worst enemy! We are an enemy within! God sees His beautiful creation uniquely made for His specific plan! Forget about what you think! God says otherwise. We are limited human beings because all we can see is the outward limitations but God sees your potential.

So how do we see our value through God’s perspective. The first step is realizing we are poor appraisers of value. The Bible should be your standard, The question is? Do you really believe what God says about you? You have a choice right now to make. Let’s take it a step further. How about if you choose to believe that for one week. I guarantee your life would change!

We must stop dwelling what others think or believe who we are. We cannot let our earthly perception keep us from living the life God has planned for us.

Let’s unpack this verse and reflect on how it can shape our understanding of ourselves and our relationship with God.

1. You Are Fearfully Made

The word “fearfully” in this context doesn’t mean to be afraid; it signifies reverence, awe, and respect. When God created you, He did so with meticulous care and deep intention. Every aspect of your being—your personality, talents, physical features, and even your quirks—was designed with purpose. Recognizing this truth should inspire awe and gratitude for the Creator.

• Do you view yourself as a masterpiece of God’s creation?
• How can you honor the intricate design God has placed within you?

2. You Are Wonderfully Made

“Wonderfully” reminds us that we are set apart, unique, and extraordinary. God didn’t create you to be a copy of someone else; He made you to fulfill a distinct purpose in His grand plan. When we try to conform to others’ expectations or diminish our individuality, we miss the beauty of God’s specific design for us.

Reflection:

• What makes you unique, and how can you celebrate that?
• Are you using your gifts and talents to glorify God?

3. Embracing God’s Wonderful Works

David’s declaration, “Your works are wonderful, I know that full well,” is a statement of confidence in God’s handiwork. It’s not boastful; it’s acknowledging the Creator’s excellence.

Reflection:

• How often do you thank God for the way He created you?
• What steps can you take to see yourself through His eyes?

4. Living Out This Truth

Understanding that you are fearfully and wonderfully made isn’t just about self-acceptance; it’s about living boldly in your identity as God’s creation. This truth empowers you to:

• Pursue your God-given purpose without fear.
• Treat your body, mind, and spirit with respect.
• Encourage and uplift others, recognizing they too are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Practical Steps:

• Spend time in prayer, thanking God for creating you.
• Write down qualities about yourself that you’re grateful for.
• Encourage someone else by reminding them of their unique value.
