“Do everything in love.” – 1 Corinthians 16:14

Life presents us with many opportunities to react—sometimes with patience and kindness, but other times with frustration, anger, or resentment. Emotions are natural, but they are also unpredictable. If we rely on them to guide our actions, we risk making choices we later regret. However, when we intentionally choose love, we align ourselves with God’s character and experience the peace and joy that comes from walking in His ways.

Love Neutralizes Sinful Motives

Acting in love is always the right course of action because it neutralizes sinful attitudes and motivations. Love keeps us from responding in pride, anger, or selfishness. Instead, it compels us to reflect Christ in our daily lives.

Example 1: Responding in Love Instead of Anger
Imagine someone speaks harshly to you—maybe a coworker criticizes you unfairly, or a family member lashes out in frustration. Your natural reaction might be to defend yourself or respond with equal harshness. However, when you choose love, you pause, pray, and respond with grace. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Love diffuses conflict and allows peace to reign.

Example 2: Choosing Love Over Resentment
Perhaps you’ve been hurt by someone in the past, and bitterness tries to take root in your heart. Love doesn’t deny the pain but chooses forgiveness instead of resentment. Ephesians 4:31-32 encourages us, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger… Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” When we forgive in love, we release the burden of pain and experience God’s healing.

Example 3: Serving in Love Despite Inconvenience
You’ve had a long, exhausting day, and someone asks for your help—maybe a friend needs a listening ear, or a neighbor could use a helping hand. Love says, “Yes, I’ll be there,” even when it’s not convenient. Galatians 6:9 urges us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Love isn’t just a feeling; it’s a commitment to reflect Christ even when it’s not easy.

Becoming More Like Christ Through Love

The more we choose love, the more we become like Jesus. Love is what brings us closer to God and shapes us into His image. Jesus Himself demonstrated perfect love when He prayed for those who crucified Him, saying, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34). If Christ could love in the midst of suffering, we too can choose love in our daily struggles.

When we prioritize love over fleeting emotions, we grow spiritually and experience a deeper relationship with God. Our hearts become softer, our patience increases, and our lives reflect His grace more fully.

Advice: Spreading Love and How It Transforms Your Heart

Love is contagious. When you choose love, you inspire others to do the same. Start small:

  • Speak words of encouragement instead of criticism.
  • Show patience when others are difficult.
  • Give without expecting anything in return.
  • Pray for those who hurt you.
  • Serve with joy, knowing you’re reflecting Christ’s love.

As you practice love daily, your heart will change. Love removes burdens, heals wounds, and draws you into God’s peace. You’ll find that as you extend love to others, God fills your heart with more love than you ever thought possible.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for showing us perfect love through Your Son, Jesus. Help us to choose love in every situation, even when our emotions tempt us to act otherwise. Teach us to love as You love—to be patient, kind, and forgiving. Soften our hearts where there is bitterness, strengthen us where we are weak, and remind us that love is always the right response. Let our lives be a reflection of Your love so that others may see You in us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lot’s of Love,
