“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” – Psalm 56:3
Fear is a natural human emotion that we all experience at some point in our lives. Even David, a man after God’s own heart, was not immune to fear. In fact, he openly admitted it, saying, “When I am afraid…” (Psalm 56:3). This acknowledgment is powerful because it shows that fear doesn’t make us weak or unfaithful—it makes us human. And just as David did, we can choose to face our fear by putting our trust in God.
Fear Took David to Unlikely Places
In 1 Samuel 21, we find David fleeing from King Saul, who was intent on taking his life. His fear drove him to take bold and risky actions, such as seeking refuge in the enemy’s camp, the land of the Philistines. David’s decision to run to King Achish was an act of desperation. He was hoping that Achish would either not recognize him or view him as a deserter, thereby gaining favor. However, when David’s identity was discovered, the king reported him, and the situation quickly escalated. In a panic, David pretended to be insane, hoping to escape the fear he felt—but he was sent away.
This story illustrates a powerful truth: fear often leads us to make decisions we normally wouldn’t. David’s fear led him to take drastic and unlikely steps, and it wasn’t until he readjusted his thinking that he found peace again.
The Cycle of Fear and Trusting God
David didn’t stay in that place of fear. After he had been sent away from King Achish’s court, he found refuge again in God. He readjusted his focus, placing his trust back in God’s protection, just as he had done time and time again. It’s important to note that David didn’t say, “If I am afraid”—he said, “When I am afraid.” David knew that fear was a part of life and that it would come again. His response was to turn to God, no matter the circumstances.
This is an important lesson for us: fear is not something we can completely avoid, but it is something we can choose not to be ruled by. Fear may come, but we can always choose to put our trust in God, even in the face of uncertainty.
Different Scenarios: How Fear Can Lead Us Astray
- Fear of Failure: You might be facing a major decision in your life—perhaps a career change, a new relationship, or a calling from God. Fear of failure might paralyze you, causing you to hesitate or doubt your abilities. You might even choose the safe route and avoid stepping out in faith. But trust in God tells us that we don’t need to fear the future because He holds it in His hands. As Isaiah 41:10 says, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.”
- Fear of Rejection: Maybe you’re afraid of speaking up for God or standing firm in your faith because of how others might respond. Fear of rejection can cause us to remain silent when we should speak truth, or to hide who we are because we don’t want to face judgment. But God calls us to be bold, knowing that He is with us. Proverbs 29:25 says, “The fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.”
- Fear of the Unknown: Life often presents us with unknowns—health concerns, financial instability, or even fear of the future. These fears can overwhelm us, but we can trust God with the unknowns. Psalm 23:4 assures us, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”
Tips for Overcoming Fear and Trusting God
- Recognize Your Fear: Don’t deny or hide from your fear. Like David, acknowledge it openly and honestly before God. There’s no shame in being afraid—there’s only strength in choosing to trust God despite it.
- Shift Your Focus: When fear takes hold, it can be easy to focus solely on the problem. Instead, take your eyes off the fear and shift your focus to God’s faithfulness. Remember His promises and how He has come through for you before.
- Pray: Bring your fears to God in prayer. Ask Him for strength, courage, and wisdom. And don’t just pray once—keep coming to God with your fears, trusting that He will guide you through them. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
- Take Action in Faith: Fear can paralyze us, but faith allows us to move forward. Even when you don’t have all the answers, take the next step in trust, knowing that God will guide you.
A Prayer for Trusting God in the Face of Fear
Heavenly Father,
I come to You today with the fears that are weighing heavy on my heart. I acknowledge that I am afraid, but I choose to put my trust in You. I know that fear will come again, but I also know that You are greater than my fears. Help me to focus on Your faithfulness and to trust You with every aspect of my life. Fill me with Your peace and guide me in every step I take. Thank You for being my refuge and strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
