“Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.” – Psalm 63:3,5
One of the great misconceptions about contentment is that it means complacency. To our culture, the contented person must be a simpleton, without passion or purpose in life. Nothing could be further from the truth for those who belong to Christ.
When you first encounter the Savior and His heart of love for you, the passion to know more of Him begins. Your heart is awakened to a peace and joy that makes you thirsty for more. The true satisfaction your soul longed for is found in intimate relationship with Him. This begins the adventure of a life of faith.
Genuinely intimate union with Jesus requires dying to our old nature and aligning our desires and priorities with His. By communing with Him in the Word and in prayer, our hearts become attuned to what Christ wants, and we walk in His will—even though that path might lead to challenges and sufferings.
When I have found myself in situations where I say, “Dear Lord, how am I going to get through this one?” Even though my heart is filled with tears, not to mention exhaustion, I somehow know God has called me to my task, and I make it a point not to step out of His will when it’s so easy to do so.
I hang on to the thought that we choose to live each day as it comes, knowing no matter what, God does not make mistakes. He has a purpose for every single trial I have been through in life. What are my lessons? What is He molding me to be or become?
A man by the name of Oswald Chambers advised this: “The battle is lost or won in the secret places of the will before God.”
A Prayer for True Contentment
Heavenly Father,
Grant us the wisdom to understand that contentment in You is not passive resignation but active trust. Help us to find our satisfaction not in circumstances but in Your presence. When trials come, remind us that You are molding us into the image of Your Son.
Give us the courage to die to our old nature daily, to align our hearts with Yours, and to follow wherever You lead. When we are tempted to step out of Your will because the path seems too difficult, strengthen our resolve and deepen our faith.
May we, like David, proclaim that Your love is better than life itself, and may our souls be satisfied as with the richest of foods. Let our lips glorify You in both joy and sorrow.
