Understanding John 10:10 and the Battle for Your Abundant Life

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” – John 10:10

Sister, we need to talk about the two voices constantly speaking into your life—and why it’s crucial that you learn to distinguish between them.

In John 10:10, Jesus gives us one of the most important truths we’ll ever need to understand: there are only two agendas operating in this world. The thief’s agenda (Satan) and the Shepherd’s agenda (Jesus). One comes to steal, kill, and destroy. The other comes to give abundant, overflowing life.

The question isn’t whether these voices are speaking—they are, every single day. The question is: Which voice are you listening to?

Understanding the Parable: Jesus as the Good Shepherd

Before we dive into verse 10, we need to understand the beautiful context Jesus painted for us. In John 10:1-9, Jesus describes Himself as both the gate and the Good Shepherd. This isn’t just a pretty pastoral image—this is Jesus revealing His heart toward you.

Jesus as the Gate means:

• He is the legitimate entrance to abundant life
• He provides security and protection
• Through Him, we find safety and provision
• He controls what has access to our lives

Jesus as the Good Shepherd means:

• He knows you personally and intimately
• He calls you by name
• He leads you to green pastures and still waters
• He protects you from predators
• He will lay down His life for you

This is the foundation we need to understand before we can grasp the magnitude of what Jesus is saying in verse 10.

What the Father of Lies Wants to Steal

Satan is called the “father of lies” (John 8:44), and his entire strategy revolves around deception. He doesn’t usually come with obvious evil—he comes with lies that sound reasonable, feelings that seem justified, and thoughts that appear to be our own.

He Wants to Steal Your Identity

The enemy’s first and most devastating attack is on your identity. He whispers:

• “You’re not really God’s daughter”
• “You’re too broken for God to use”
• “You’re not worthy of love”
• “You’re a mistake, an accident”
• “You’ll never be enough”

Why this matters: When you don’t know who you are, you’ll accept treatment that’s beneath your true value. You’ll settle for relationships, jobs, and situations that diminish rather than celebrate the daughter of the King that you are.

He Wants to Steal Your Peace

Satan is the author of anxiety, worry, and fear. He floods your mind with:

• “What if this terrible thing happens?”
• “You can’t trust God with this situation”
• “You need to control everything to be safe”
• “Something bad is about to happen”
• “You’re not protected”

Why this matters: Without peace, you can’t hear God’s voice clearly. You make decisions from fear rather than faith, and you miss the abundant life God has for you because you’re too anxious to step into it.

He Wants to Steal Your Purpose

The enemy convinces you that:

• “Your life doesn’t matter”
• “God doesn’t have a plan for you”
• “You’re too old/young/broken to be used by God”
• “What you have to offer isn’t valuable”
• “Your past disqualifies you from your future”

Why this matters: When you don’t know your purpose, you waste precious years wandering aimlessly, settling for survival instead of walking in the destiny God created you for.

He Wants to Steal Your Joy

Satan replaces God’s joy with:

• Comparison to others
• Discontent with your circumstances
• Focus on what’s missing rather than what’s present
• Guilt for being happy when others are suffering
• The lie that joy is selfish or shallow

Why this matters: Joy is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10). Without it, you’re weakened and vulnerable to further attacks.

He Wants to Steal Your Relationships

The enemy works to:

• Create division in your marriage and family
• Isolate you from godly friendships
• Make you suspicious of people who genuinely care about you
• Convince you that you’re better off alone
• Destroy trust and communication

Why this matters: We were created for connection. Isolation makes you vulnerable to deception and depression.

He Wants to Steal Your Hope

Satan whispers:

• “It will never get better”
• “God has forgotten about you”
• “Your prayers don’t matter”
• “This is as good as it gets”
• “You might as well give up”

Why this matters: Hope is the anchor of your soul (Hebrews 6:19). Without hope, you stop moving forward and start just surviving.

What God Wants to Give Instead

While the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, Jesus comes with a completely different agenda. He doesn’t come to take from you—He comes to give TO you.

God Wants to Give You Unshakeable Identity

God says:

• “You are My beloved daughter” (1 John 3:1)
• “You are fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14)
• “You are chosen, holy, and dearly loved” (Colossians 3:12)
• “You are more than a conqueror” (Romans 8:37)
• “You are His masterpiece” (Ephesians 2:10)

The result: When you know who you are, you walk differently, talk differently, and make decisions differently. You don’t accept treatment that’s beneath your royal status.

God Wants to Give You Perfect Peace

God offers:

• Peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7)
• Rest for your weary soul (Matthew 11:28)
• Freedom from anxiety and fear (1 Peter 5:7)
• Confidence in His protection and provision
• Assurance that He works all things together for good (Romans 8:28)

The result: You can sleep well at night, make decisions from a place of calm confidence, and trust God’s heart even when you can’t see His hand.

God Wants to Give You Divine Purpose

God declares:

• “I know the plans I have for you” (Jeremiah 29:11)
• “You are His workmanship, created for good works” (Ephesians 2:10)
• “Your gifts make room for you” (Proverbs 18:16)
• “He began a good work in you and will complete it” (Philippians 1:6)
• “You can do all things through Christ” (Philippians 4:13)

The result: Every day has meaning. Your life has significance. Your story matters and can impact others for the Kingdom.

God Wants to Give You Overflowing Joy

God provides:

• Joy that comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5)
• Fullness of joy in His presence (Psalm 16:11)
• Joy that is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10)
• Joy that no one can take from you (John 16:22)
• Joy unspeakable and full of glory (1 Peter 1:8)

The result: You become a light in dark places. Your joy becomes contagious and draws others to the source of your happiness—Jesus.

God Wants to Give You Life-Giving Relationships

God offers:

• A spiritual family who loves and supports you
• Friendships that sharpen you like iron sharpens iron
• Mentors who pour into your life
• Opportunities to pour into others
• Restoration of broken family relationships where possible

The result: You’re surrounded by people who celebrate you, challenge you to grow, and support you through difficult seasons.

God Wants to Give You Living Hope

God promises:

• A future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11)
• Beauty for ashes (Isaiah 61:3)
• New mercies every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23)
• That He’s preparing a place for you (John 14:2)
• That your latter days will be greater than your former days (Job 42:12)

The result: No matter what you’re walking through, you know it’s not the end of your story. God has good things ahead for you.

The Choice is Yours

Here’s what I want you to understand, beautiful daughter of God: You get to choose which voice you listen to.

Every morning when you wake up, you have a choice:

• Will you listen to the thief’s lies or the Shepherd’s truth?
• Will you focus on what’s being stolen or what’s being given?
• Will you live from a place of scarcity or abundance?
• Will you believe the worst about your situation or trust God’s heart?

The enemy can only steal what you give him access to. But Jesus offers you abundant life freely—life that overflows, life that’s rich and full and meaningful.

How to Recognize Which Voice You’re Hearing

The Thief’s Voice:

• Brings fear, anxiety, and worry
• Makes you feel hopeless and defeated
• Focuses on your failures and shortcomings
• Isolates you from others
• Makes you doubt God’s love and faithfulness
• Rushes you into poor decisions
• Brings condemnation and shame

The Shepherd’s Voice:

• Brings peace and comfort
• Gives hope and encouragement
• Reminds you of your identity in Christ
• Draws you into community
• Confirms God’s love and faithfulness
• Gives you wisdom for decisions
• Brings conviction that leads to freedom

Living in the Abundant Life Jesus Offers

Abundant life isn’t about having perfect circumstances—it’s about having perfect peace in the midst of any circumstance. It’s not about getting everything you want—it’s about wanting what God wants for you because you trust His heart.

Abundant life means:

• Knowing you’re loved unconditionally
• Having purpose that gives meaning to your days
• Experiencing joy that doesn’t depend on your circumstances
• Walking in peace that guards your heart and mind
• Building relationships that add to your life rather than drain it
• Having hope that sustains you through difficult seasons
• Living with confidence in your identity as God’s daughter

A Prayer for Abundant Life

Father God, thank You for sending Jesus to give us abundant life. Thank You that while the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, You come to give life—and life more abundantly.

Holy Spirit, help us to recognize the thief’s voice when he tries to speak lies over our identity, our purpose, our peace, and our hope. Give us discernment to know the difference between his voice and the voice of our Good Shepherd.

Jesus, we choose to listen to Your voice above all others. When the enemy whispers that we’re not enough, help us remember that we are Your beloved daughters. When he tries to steal our peace with worry and fear, remind us that You have overcome the world. When he attempts to kill our dreams and hope, fill us with vision for the future You have planned for us.

Lord, we receive Your abundant life today. We open our hearts to receive:

• Your perfect love that casts out fear
• Your peace that passes understanding
• Your joy that is our strength
• Your hope that anchors our souls
• Your purpose that gives meaning to our days
• Your identity that makes us confident daughters of the King

We reject every lie the enemy has whispered to our hearts. We replace his lies with Your truth. We choose to walk in the abundant life You died to give us.

Thank You that we don’t have to fight for this abundant life—we simply have to receive it. Thank You that it’s not based on our performance but on Your grace. Thank You that our best days are ahead of us, not behind us.

Help us to be living testimonies of Your abundant life so that other women see the difference You make and want to know You too.
