Lee Strobel’s Story + The Modern Faith Revival Happening Right Now

PART 1: THE MOVEMENT HAPPENING RIGHT NOW

Something remarkable is happening.

After decades of declining church attendance, rising secularism, and a culture increasingly hostile to Christianity, the tide is turning.

And it’s not the older generations leading the charge.

THE STATISTICS THAT SHOCKED EVERYONE:

📊 2024 Pew Research Study:

• 41% of Gen Z (ages 18-27) now identify as Christian—UP from 34% in 2019
• 52% of Millennials who left the church are returning or exploring faith again
• Church attendance among 18-35 year-olds increased 23% in the past 3 years

📊 Barna Group 2025 Report:

• 63% of young adults say they’re “more interested in spiritual matters” than they were 5 years ago
• “Deconstruction” (leaving childhood faith) peaked in 2020-2022
• “Reconstruction” (returning to belief) is now the dominant trend in 2024-2026

📊 What Changed?

• COVID isolation created spiritual hunger
• Social media “deconstruction” trend left people empty and searching
• Many realized secular culture doesn’t satisfy the soul
• A generation raised without faith is now seeking what their parents abandoned

THEY’RE ASKING THE SAME QUESTIONS LEE STROBEL ASKED:

❓ “Is there actual EVIDENCE for God?”

❓ “Can I believe the Bible and still be intelligent?”

❓ “Did Jesus really rise from the dead—or is it just a myth?”

❓ “Can faith and facts coexist?”

These aren’t new questions.

They’re the SAME questions a hard-nosed, atheist journalist asked in 1980.

His name was Lee Strobel.

And his search for answers became one of the most influential Christian books of all time:

“The Case for Christ.

PART 2: WHO WAS LEE STROBEL BEFORE GOD?

The Man Who HATED Christianity

Lee Strobel wasn’t a casual skeptic.

He wasn’t someone who simply “didn’t believe.”

He was HOSTILE to Christianity.

LEE STROBEL’S BACKGROUND:

Education:

• Studied journalism at the University of Missouri
• Master’s degree in Law from Yale Law School
• Trained in evidence, logic, and skeptical inquiry

Career:

• Award-winning legal editor for the Chicago Tribune
• Investigative journalist known for exposing fraud and corruption
• Built a career on facts, evidence, and proof

Worldview:

• Devout atheist – believed God was a fairy tale for weak-minded people
• Scientism – only what could be scientifically proven was real
• Materialism – the physical world was all that existed
• Moral relativism – no absolute truth, no ultimate meaning

Personal Life:

• Married to Leslie – a loving, kind woman
• Successful career – respect, accolades, influence
• Heavy drinker – used alcohol to cope with the emptiness he wouldn’t acknowledge
• Selfish and self-centered – admitted he prioritized his career and pleasure over his family

His view of Christians:

• “Naive”
• “Anti-intellectual”
• “Brainwashed”
• “Believing myths without evidence.”

He pitied them.

PART 3: THE MOMENT EVERYTHING CHANGES

When His Wife Found Jesus

In 1979, Lee’s wife, Leslie, became a Christian.

And Lee was FURIOUS.

He thought she’d joined a cult.

He thought she’d lost her mind.

He was terrified this “Jesus thing” would ruin their marriage.

BUT THEN… HE NOTICED SOMETHING

Leslie changed.

Not in the “brainwashed zombie” way he expected.

She became:

• More patient
• More loving
• More joyful
• More selfless
• A better wife
• A better mother

And it bothered him.

Because if Christianity was just a fairy tale… how was it CHANGING her for the better?

THE CHALLENGE THAT LAUNCHED THE INVESTIGATION

Lee decided to use his skills as an investigative journalist to DISPROVE Christianity once and for all.

His plan:

1. Research the historical evidence for Jesus
2. Interview top scholars and experts
3. Expose the myths and contradictions
4. Prove to Leslie that it was all a lie so she’d come back to “reality.”

What he didn’t expect:

The evidence would lead him TO God, not AWAY from Him.

PART 4: THE INVESTIGATION THAT CHANGED HIS LIFE

Lee spent nearly two years investigating Christianity with the rigor of a legal case.

He approached it like a courtroom trial:

• Is the evidence admissible?
• Are the witnesses credible?
• Does the evidence hold up under scrutiny?

THE KEY QUESTIONS HE INVESTIGATED:

1. CAN THE BIOGRAPHIES OF JESUS (THE GOSPELS) BE TRUSTED?

His Doubts:

• “The Gospels were written too late to be reliable.”
• “They’re full of contradictions.”
• “They’re just myths that evolved over time.”

What He Discovered:

✅ The Gospels were written 30-60 years after Jesus’ death—within the lifetime of EYEWITNESSES

✅ Ancient historians consider sources within 100 years “contemporary”—the Gospels are closer to the events than almost ANY ancient document

✅ We have more manuscript evidence for the New Testament than for ANY other ancient text (5,800+ manuscripts vs. 10 for Caesar’s Gallic Wars)

✅ The “contradictions” are actually minor variations that prove INDEPENDENCE—if they matched perfectly, it would suggest collusion

Verdict: The Gospels are historically reliable.

2. DOES JESUS MATCH THE IDENTITY OF THE MESSIAH?

His Doubts:

• “Jesus was just a good teacher.”
• “The Messiah prophecies are vague and could apply to anyone.”

What He Discovered:

✅ Over 60 major prophecies about the Messiah were written 400-1,500 years BEFORE Jesus was born

✅ Jesus fulfilled ALL of them with 100% accuracy

✅ The odds of ONE person fulfilling just 8 prophecies? 1 in 10^17 (that’s 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000)

✅ The odds of fulfilling 48 prophecies? 1 in 10^157 (a number so large it’s incomprehensible)

Examples:

• Born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2) ✓
• Born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14) ✓
• Betrayed for 30 pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12) ✓
• Crucified (Psalm 22, written 1,000 years before crucifixion was invented) ✓
• Rose on the third day (Psalm 16:10, Hosea 6:2) ✓

Verdict: Jesus is the Messiah.

3. WAS JESUS REALLY GOD IN HUMAN FORM?

His Doubts:

• “Jesus never claimed to be God.”
• “That was added later by the church.”

What He Discovered: ✅ Jesus repeatedly claimed to be God:

• “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30)
• “Before Abraham was born, I AM” (John 8:58—using God’s name from Exodus 3:14)
• He accepted worship (Matthew 14:33, John 20:28)
• He forgave sins (only God can do that—Mark 2:5-7)

✅ The Jews tried to stone Him for blasphemy—they UNDERSTOOD His claims (John 10:33)

✅ Even Jesus’ enemies didn’t deny His claims—they called Him a blasphemer, proving He DID claim deity

Verdict: Jesus claimed to be God.

4. DID JESUS REALLY RISE FROM THE DEAD?

His Doubts:

• “The resurrection is a myth.”
• “The disciples stole the body.”
• “Jesus didn’t actually die.”

What He Discovered:

✅ THE EMPTY TOMB:

• Attested by multiple independent sources
• Even Jesus’ enemies admitted the tomb was empty (they just claimed the body was stolen)
• If the body were there, the Romans/Jews would’ve produced it to end Christianity instantly

✅ THE EYEWITNESS TESTIMONY:

• 500+ people saw the resurrected Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:6)
• Women were the first witnesses (in a culture where women’s testimony wasn’t valued—no one making up a story would choose women as primary witnesses)
• The disciples died for their testimony—people die for lies they BELIEVE, but not for lies they KNOW are false

✅ THE TRANSFORMATION:

• Disciples went from terrified, hiding, to boldly proclaiming Jesus’ resurrection
• They were tortured and killed for their testimony—yet NONE recanted
• People don’t die for what they KNOW is a lie

✅ ALTERNATIVE THEORIES DON’T HOLD UP:

• “Disciples stole the body” → Roman guards would’ve prevented it; disciples wouldn’t die for a known lie
• “Jesus didn’t actually die.” → Roman executioners were experts; the spear thrust confirmed death
• “Hallucination theory” → 500+ people don’t have the SAME hallucination
• “Legend developed over time.” → Too many eyewitnesses still alive to correct it

Verdict: The resurrection is the best explanation of the evidence.

5. IS JESUS THE ONLY WAY TO GOD

His Doubts:

• “That’s arrogant and exclusive.”
• “All religions lead to God.”

What He Discovered:

✅ Jesus explicitly claimed exclusivity: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6)

✅ Other religions contradict each other—they can’t all be true

✅ Christianity is unique:

• Only religion where God comes to us (not us trying to reach God)
• Only religion offering free salvation (not earned through works)
• Only religion with a resurrected Savior (verified historically)

Verdict: Jesus is the only way—not because Christians are arrogant, but because the evidence points to Him uniquely.

PART 5: THE VERDICT – LEE STROBEL SURRENDERS

After nearly two years of investigation…

After interviewing 13+ leading scholars…

After examining the historical, archaeological, and manuscript evidence…

After approaching it as a legal case…

Lee Strobel reached a conclusion he never expected:

The evidence for Christianity is OVERWHELMING.

NOVEMBER 8, 1981 – THE DAY LEE STROBEL PRAYED

Lee sat alone in his bedroom.

The weight of the evidence was undeniable.

He later wrote:

“In light of the overwhelming historical evidence for Jesus Christ, the real question wasn’t whether I would accept Him as my Savior, but whether I had the courage to accept the implications of doing so.”

For the first time in his life, Lee Strobel prayed:

“God, I don’t know if You’re real. But if You are… I’m Yours.”

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT:

Lee’s life was transformed—just like Leslie’s had been.

He:

• Quit drinking
• Became a better husband and father
• Eventually left journalism to become a pastor
• Wrote “The Case for Christ” (millions of copies sold worldwide)
• Spent the rest of his life defending the faith he once tried to destroy

The investigative journalist who set out to DISPROVE Jesus became one of Christianity’s most effective DEFENDERS.

PART 6: THE TIMES WE ALL DOUBT (AND WHY THAT’S OKAY)

Lee Strobel’s story isn’t just about an atheist becoming a Christian.

It’s about HONEST DOUBT leading to STRONG FAITH

WHEN DO WE DOUBT? (AND WHY?)

1. WHEN SUFFERING HITS

The Doubt: “If God is good and powerful, why is this happening?”

Lee’s Answer:

• God didn’t create suffering—sin did (Genesis 3)
• God entered our suffering (Jesus on the cross)
• God uses suffering to refine us, grow us, and bring good (Romans 8:28)
• God will one day end all suffering (Revelation 21:4)

Lee experienced this when:

• His mother was diagnosed with cancer
• Friends faced tragedy
• He saw injustice in the world

His response: “The evidence for God doesn’t disappear when life gets hard. In fact, Jesus is the ONLY satisfying answer to suffering.”

2. WHEN SCIENCE SEEMS TO CONTRADICT FAITH

The Doubt: “Science has proven we don’t need God.”

Lee’s Answer:

• Science actually POINTS to God:
  • The universe had a beginning (Big Bang) → Requires a Beginner
  • Fine-tuning of the universe → Requires a Designer
  • DNA is information → Requires an Information Giver
  • Consciousness exists → Requires a Mind beyond matter

Lee wrestled with this when:

• He studied evolution
• He examined cosmology
• He investigated the origin of life

His response: “The more I studied science, the MORE it pointed to an intelligent Creator.”

3. WHEN UNANSWERED QUESTIONS PILE UP

The Doubt: “There are things I can’t explain. Maybe it’s not true.”

Lee’s Answer:

• You don’t need to have ALL the answers to trust the BIG answer
• We don’t reject gravity because we don’t understand quantum mechanics
• Evidence for the resurrection is so strong that unanswered peripheral questions don’t undermine it

Lee struggled with:

• “Why does God allow evil?”
• “What about people who’ve never heard the Gospel?”
• “Why are there different denominations?”

His response: “I don’t have to understand EVERYTHING to trust the MAIN thing—Jesus rose from the dead. That changes everything.”

4. WHEN CHRISTIANS FAIL US

The Doubt: “If Christians act like hypocrites, maybe it’s all fake.”

Lee’s Answer:

• Christianity stands or falls on Jesus—not on Christians
• Hypocrites prove humans are broken—which is WHY we need a Savior
• Judge Christianity by its Founder, not its followers

Lee saw this when:

• Church leaders fell into a scandal
• Christians behaved badly
• “Christians” were judgmental and harsh

His response: “I don’t follow Christians. I follow Christ. And HE has never failed.”

5. WHEN LIFE FEELS EMPTY DESPITE BELIEF

The Doubt: “I believe, but I don’t FEEL close to God. Maybe it’s not real.”

Lee’s Answer:

• Faith isn’t based on FEELINGS—it’s based on FACTS
• The resurrection happened whether you FEEL it or not
• Feelings follow obedience—draw near to God, and He’ll draw near to you (James 4:8)

Lee experienced this:

• In dry seasons of faith
• When prayer felt empty
• When God seemed silent

His response: “I return to the EVIDENCE. Jesus rose. That’s FACT. My feelings don’t change that.”

PART 7: THE CASE FOR CHRIST – KEY POINTS THAT RELATE TO EVERYDAY LIFE

Lee Strobel’s book isn’t just academic.

It’s PRACTICAL.

Here’s how his key points apply to YOUR life today:

POINT 1: “YOU CAN TRUST THE GOSPELS”

Why This Matters in Everyday Life:

When you read the Bible, you’re not reading myths.

You’re reading eyewitness testimony that’s been historically verified.

So when Jesus says:

• “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20)
• “Come to me, all who are weary” (Matthew 11:28)
• “I will never leave you” (Hebrews 13:5)

You can TRUST those promises.

• “Forgive 70 times 7” → You forgive
• “Love your enemies” → You love
• “Seek first the kingdom” → You prioritize Him

Application:

• Obedience isn’t legalism—it’s trusting the One who knows best
• Jesus’ commands are for your GOOD, not your restriction
• You’re not following a philosophy—you’re following GOD HIMSELF

POINT 3: “THE RESURRECTION IS REAL”

Why This Matters in Everyday Life:

If Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, your faith is useless (1 Corinthians 15:14).

But BECAUSE He rose:

• Death is defeated
• Sin is forgiven
• Eternal life is guaranteed
• Your future is SECURE

Application:

• You don’t have to fear death (1 Corinthians 15:55)
• Your sins are truly forgiven (Romans 8:1)
• You have HOPE in suffering (Romans 8:18)
• This life isn’t all there is (2 Corinthians 4:17-18)

POINT 4: “FAITH AND REASON AREN’T ENEMIES”

Why This Matters in Everyday Life:

You don’t have to check your brain at the door to be a Christian.

Faith is REASONABLE.

So when people say:

• “You can’t be smart and believe in God” → FALSE
• “Science disproves the Bible” → FALSE
• “Faith is blind” → FALSE

You can confidently say: “I have EVIDENCE for my faith.”

Application:

• Study apologetics (defense of the faith)
• Ask questions—God isn’t afraid of your doubts
• Engage skeptics with grace and TRUTH
• Raise your kids to know WHY Christianity is true

POINT 5: “YOUR DOUBTS CAN LEAD TO STRONGER FAITH”

Why This Matters in Everyday Life:

Lee Strobel’s doubts didn’t destroy his faith—they STRENGTHENED it.

Doubt isn’t the enemy of faith. CERTAINTY WITHOUT INVESTIGATION is.

Application:

• Don’t be afraid to question
• Investigate your doubts
• Seek answers from credible sources
• Let your doubts drive you DEEPER into truth

PART 8: WHY GEN Z AND MILLENNIALS ARE FOLLOWING LEE’S PATH

The Parallels Are Striking:

LEE STROBEL IN 1980:

• Raised without faith
• Secular worldview
• Believed science disproved God
• Hostile to Christianity
• Began searching for TRUTH

GEN Z/MILLENNIALS IN 2025:

• Many were raised without faith (or deconstructed from childhood faith)
• Secular culture dominance
• Told science and faith are incompatible
• Grew up seeing Christians mocked
• Now searching for MEANING and TRUTH

WHY THEY’RE COMING BACK:

1. SECULARISM LEFT THEM EMPTY

The promises of secular culture:

• “You don’t need God to have meaning.”
• “Science has all the answers.”
• “Live your truth.”
• “Pleasure and success will fulfill you.”

The reality:

• Depression and anxiety at all-time highs
• Loneliness epidemic
• Lack of purpose
• Emptiness despite material success

They’re realizing: Secularism doesn’t satisfy the soul.

2. “DECONSTRUCTION” LED TO DESTRUCTION

The deconstruction movement promised:

• “Free yourself from toxic religion.”
• “Question everything”
• “Find your own truth.”

What it actually did:

• Left people spiritually homeless
• Destroyed foundations without rebuilding
• Created confusion and cynicism

They’re realizing that you can’t deconstruct your way to peace.

3. THEY’RE ASKING LEE’S QUESTIONS

Gen Z and Millennials aren’t accepting faith blindly.

They’re investigating—just like Lee did.

They’re asking:

• “Is there EVIDENCE for God?”
• “Can I trust the Bible?”
• “Did Jesus really rise?”

And the evidence is leading them to the SAME conclusion Lee reached:

Christianity is TRUE.

4. THEY’RE SEEING TRANSFORMATION

As Lee noticed, Leslie’s transformation…

Young people are noticing:

• Christians who have peace in chaos
• Believers who have purpose and meaning
• Followers of Jesus who are genuinely different

And they want what they see.
